The Other Side
I've wrote “ The other Side” because I have always
thought of all the black and white people and how
they interact. Like some white and or black people
are sometimes racist. So I thought if I could bring an
obstacle between the two races and see what I would
make out of the two races. So I came up with two
little girls in different races that would meet each-
other. And that's how I came up with the book “the
other side”.

Why did you write this story?
I wrote this story because I wanted to show the effects of discrimination in the world to a younger age. Especially to Gr 7-8 because that is the right time to show them this racism because they are the people who are going to change the world as they get older. Also I wrote this book because I was a victim of racism at a very young age.

Why I wrote "The other side"??
I wrote, “The other side” because I think that kids these days need to know what happened in the past, with black and white people. In this story I write about a young girl living the life of not knowing the problem between white and black people. In the end everyone realizes that there is nothing different about white and black people. We are all the same no matter what our skin colour is.

There are many answers to this question but I will tell the reason why I wrote the book. I wrote this book because I'm black and I hang out with only black friends, so i decided to make a bond between black and white people. Instead of convincing myself or one of my friends to find a white friend I did an easier way to do it, make a book. The other side shows people that anyone can be friends, even if your from a different race.

Why did I write the other side? There are many reason why I wrote this book, fist of all I wrote it because I wanted to tell of the separation in this world, just because people are different. I wanted to show the world that just because people are different on the outside does not mean that they are different on the inside. I decided that to show this I would put it in the perspective of two little girls, Annie and Clover. In the beginning Annie and Clover never spoke and never met just because they where different but when they finally met they found out that they were not so different on the inside. I also wrote this to tell that just because someone is older does not mean they are always correct. In the story Annie and Clover's parents tell them not to go on the other side of the fence but it turned out that when they did it led to one of the best things that ever happened to them.

Dear children
over the years I have visited thousands of children and and I have noticed that the most frequent asked question while i'm with them is,why did you write the book “The Other Side”? So now I would like to share my answer with you.
I decided to write the book because I always thought as a child why are my parents always right? Why is it that no matter what I say my words are always overpowered by those of an adult? So I decided to write this book to show children all over the world that you can make a difference and just because you are young you can still be the one to stand up. I also wrote this book to show that you don't always have to listen to what others say and sometimes by breaking the rules you overcome a very big boundrie.
I hope that the book has inspired you

Why did you write the “other side”?
I wrote the other side because when i was a child we where split up too the black and the white guests like in the story. I wanted to tell about my childhood but i did not want to tell my story in a nice perspective so that i could write it in a children's book but i could still get the message throw to people that are going to change the world. And maybe i will inspire some people to change the world!!!

Why I wrote This Book
I wrote this book because I wanted to show that kids don’t always do what they’re told to. Now they are friends because Annie and Clover fought the power and won. This is why I Jacqueline Woodson wrote “The Other Side”.
Why I Wrote This Book...
I wrote this book because I wanted to let people know that everyone is different and that nobody would want to live in a world where everybody is the same.It is better if everyone is friends. Kids are smart enough to know this. Adults think that it is because kids dont understand..but kids are the ones that are smart enough to understand that everyone can be friends.
Another reason I wrote this book was that I wanted to show kids that people are seperated for no reason! So what if they have a different colour of skin.would you want to be seperated from your friends just because of your skin colour which you cant choose???
That is why I wrote this book.

I wrote “The Other Side” because I think that people needed to know about what happened in the past but I wanted to make it a little bit less mean. I wanted to inform people about the way that people were treated because they had a different skin colour. I decided to write it from Clover's perspective because I wanted to show what it was like for a kid with darker skin to live in those days and how much presure there was on them. I wrote it from Clover's perspective to show how powerful kids are and how they are the change.

Why the Author Wrote this Book
From the Authors point of view
I wrote this book because i wanted to show how bad racism is today. These children made it seem not as bad as the real world... In the world today people aren't allowed to drink out of fountains if your skin is dark. That is the real world and its not a nice one. I think that our world isn't going to be a nice place in the future. I wanted to inform children that racism is wrong and that you shouldn't judge people on their appearance its the person on the inside that counts.

Why I wrote this book
The reason I have written this book is to in my opinion, to show the world what was happening between black and white people at this time
in the world’s history. Also when this story took place (mid 40’s or early 50’s) America and Canada had just came off a large war and is just healing from the loss of all those people and was a hard time to be living in as a kid and was even tougher to live in the southern U.S. This book is about the white children and black children being not even able to talk to each other. This book is about how black people were discriminated.

Why did you write the book “ The Other Side”?
Well I wrote this book because I felt like racism, color and genre was a big issue and I hope that my book has inspired young little ones to not care about color and focus more on who someone really is inside and personality wise apose to what someone looks like. I hope that in the near future people are a lot more kind and have a better perspective on a person before judging so harshley and hurting someones feelings. I also wrote this book because when I was young I was in the middle of everything almost everyday I thought about what people looked like when really that was wrong because everybody is a person, everyone has feelings. I sat and watched people be called names because of there color and because of how they felt and yet I should have said something because now because of one person the world is a different place and now I wish I was the one to have changed it. But now things are difffrent and people no longer care about skin color or genre which I think has made the world a lot more peacefull and for that I am greatfull, imagine if nothing had changed if everyone still cared the world would be the same the question is like Annie and Clover would anyone bother to cross the fence???

The Other Side

I, Jacqueline Woodson rote “the other side” to inspire kids that they have rights too. Both Annie and Clover fight for the rights of kids to become friends. It tells the story of how the mothers of the 2 kids tell them not to go near the fence or they might get hurt, Annie wasn't afraid but Clover obeyed her mother. Its inspiring to me ,because, sometimes something might be in our way of doing what we want to do, it doesn't mean we cant do it. We all have obstacles in life and sometimes we might have to avoid them. We all think that are parents make the best choices for us but all kids should do what they think is the best choice for them self. Also some people may be a different skin color or race but it doesn't mean we can not be friends or talk to them. I think that when the kids decided to play together and the story was told it gave a message to all kids around the world that they have rights too.
I wrote this book because I wanted to tell people about the mental and physical barriers there were between races.I wanted to show people the hardships of young children growing up in that period of time. That's why I wrote the book from a kids perspective. The message that I want people to get from reading my book is that we are all pretty much the same, not one of us is better than the other. Little kids don't care what colour others are or what kind of hair they have, it's the parents; the adults that are conveying the message: they are different than us. When Annie and Clover cross the fence and rebel by becoming friends, they are showing us just how powerful kids can be. They are the next generation and they have the power to change anything.

I wrote the book the other side because
I wanted to tell a story about the white and the black people.
I wanted to tell the story in a different way , so in the story I added the fence to separate them.
I wanted the little girl in the story to be the author because I wanted to show to the younger children that this actually did happen.

Question: Why did you write the book “The Other Side”?
Answer: I wrote this story because back in the years of the 1940's and 1950's racism was a big issue. And a lot of people were being judged by their race and color. I didn't believe in this because its not what a person looks like on the outside, it counts of what is in the inside. And a lot of towns that had people that were different races and had different beliefs were often divided by a wall or fence. But when I wrote this book two young girls that were divided by a fence overcame the fact that were different and they became friends.

I wrote the story “The Other Side” because I wanted to show the reasons why separating black people from white people is wrong. I wanted to show the story to little kids in a different way so that they would understand too. To prove this to the younger children I made the seperation come in to reality by putting in a fence. I also wrote this story so that everyone could understand racism and why it is wrong. This is why I decided to write this story.

The reason I wrote ''The Other Side'' was because I wanted to show how back then so where around the 1940's how black people where separated from white people and to show how it is wrong. I also wanted to show you as a young child have an enormous power to change the world and you also have your say in all these difficult situasion around the world such as the conflics between these different races of people to show that nobodys the same that everyone is different.Thats why I wrote the other side!!!

I wrote this book to show that sometimes you have to do something wrong to do something right and It is not wrong to be different because we are all the same on the inside. That is why I wrote this book

The Other Side
I wrote this book because I wanted to raise awareness of discrimination. I used one that I personally was affected by in my childhood , even now as an adult and the one that I saw the most of in my life. I always felt that adults would separate the different colours and that the children were being smarter by thinking that everybody is different and thats okay! Children don't see the differences and compare each other like adults judge each other!
